U.S. lumber production up 5.2 percent in first quarter
In the first quarter of this year, the United States produced about 9.16 billion board feet (bdft)(about 21.6152 million cubic meters) of softwood, up 5.2 percent from the same period last year. According to statistics, the output of three months is higher than last year's level. From a regional perspective, this is mainly due to higher production growth in the southern United States. In the southern United States, cork production increased by 8.1 to 5.116 billion board feet (about 12.0724 million cubic meters). In contrast, the U.S. coast and the U.S. interior produced 2.238 billion board feet (about 5.2811 million cubic meters) and 1.128 billion board feet (2.6619 million cubic meters), respectively, below and slightly above the same period last year. As a result, the South's share of total U.S. sawn cork production increased by 1.5 percentage points to 55.9 percent in the current period. Data from relevant departments in Ottawa, Canada, show that Canada exported 3.133 billion board feet (about 7.3931 million cubic meters) of cork to the United States in the first quarter, an increase of 0.5 percent over the same period last year. Among them, British Columbia's supply fell by 5.1 percent to 1.138 billion board feet (2.6854 million cubic meters), and Quebec's exports fell by 6.6 percent to 0.5637 billion board feet (about 1.3302 million cubic meters). Canadian exports to the United States are expected to fall by more than 20 percent in the second quarter.
